In Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) , imperial stormtroopers are combing the desert to find evidence of the escape pod and its contents. One stormtrooper exclaims: Look sir! Droids! ...and holds up a fairly large metal or plastic part. Where did this part come from? Did it come from C-3PO or R2-D2? For the life of me I cannot think of where it would have come from. Or did it come from the escape pod itself? And how is he so certain that it came from...

Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:

That piece of metal came from C-3PO, according to my copy of Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary (pages 212-213): A metal O-ring jarred loose from C-3PO's left knee joint helped Darth Vader's stormtroopers to track the droids on Tatooine.
