How do I attach a towel bar with no studs and no room for toggle bolts?

I'm trying to replace my ceramic towel bar with a metal one. I think the ceramic one was attached to the drywall with adhesive. It held up well and I was able to remove it easily with a prybar. The bathroom is pretty small, so there's only one location the towel bar can go. I'm in a condo (about 15 years old) and the wall is shared with another unit. The wall is 1/2" drywall and when I drill into it there is metal immediately behind the drywall....

Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:

If you have any kind of drywall skills at all, you could cut out the drywall in the section where you want to put the towel bar, add some blocking (guess you gotta figure out if your studs are metal or wood) where your screws would go, and then repair the drywall. Then you could install your towel bar, screwing into the new blocking.
