Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:
Let's try to compile a list of pros and cons of wearing either pair. I would wear the sandals: When it's hot and dry and the road is an easy hiking path or even a paved road or I'd have to wade trough knee-deep water, as getting the sandals wet doesn't matter. I would wear the boots: When it's cold or rainy or the path is steep, slippery, clogged with boulders or otherwise difficult to walk on, as the boots protect the ankles and the toes and have better grip. Also, if you wear the boots, you only have to carry the sandals in your backpack, which is more comfortable than having to carry the (much heavier and larger) boots in or at the backpack.
