Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:

The only rule is that the free kick has to be taken from the spot where the offence occurred. So in theory it should be that exact spot. It is up to the referee to judge whether it is taken from the correct spot. I have certainly corrected players in this regard and would require a retake if I'm not happy with the position that the players decide is the correct one.
