Could it be Madame Sousatzka from 1988? Shirley Maclaine stars as an older woman with curly hair. She's a piano teacher who takes on a young, poor Indian boy as a student. I don't think the boy lives with her and can't remember if there's a scene involving breaking dishes. Here's the trailer .
