Replacing water heater thermopile - Recommendations

I have a Whirlpool N40T61-343 water heater for about several years. Couple of days ago, it stopped working. This is what I did: Switched it to pilot Pushed down on pilot and pushed the igniter till it lights Once it lights, keep it pushed down on pilot for 60 secs Switch to the desired setting When I switched, it started blinking twice and the light slowly dimmed. Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:

Throwing parts at a problem is actually often employed in HVAC. For $20 I'd give the thermopile replacement a shot. If you have a multimeter you could test it but thermopiles and thermocouples often go bad so pretty good chance that is the problem. I'd just get the thermopile and not the whole pilot assembly and get one that specifically list your model. N40T61-343
