Drywall repairs showing through primer and paint

I made a number of drywall repairs, some small and some big, and almost all of them are showing through after priming and painting. The edges of the repair are visible in all cases and most of the patches also appear as though they have a hump. So far, I've only painted the main floor, and before painting upstairs, I'm trying to understand what the issue is and how to correct it. Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:

Before priming run your finger across the patch. You should not be able to tell any difference from drywall to mud. A bright light at different angles can show differences also. Drywall mud work is half art and half practice to do, that it does not show though paint. Sand the patches. Use light applications of the mud to build up, instead heavy. Do not be afraid of feathering out to 12 to 18 inches from a patch if needed.
