$PROMPT_COMMAND should contain __vte_prompt_command from /etc/profile.d/vte-2.91.sh for things to work. You have magicmonty/bash-git-prompt installed poorly, which caused a conflict. To reset your Bash: cd ~ mkdir backup mv -t backup .bashrc .profile .bash_profile cp -t . /etc/skel/.bashrc /etc/skel/.profile reboot
