A week ago my server was not longer booting; I did a backup a day before; luckily I didn't need it: I started with the live (same disto: ubuntu), copied efi, kernel, initrm, stuff, in the empty partition and it went alive. I was lucky: in case the damage were worse I would heave to reinstall&configure the services: I would have saved only the data.
