Great question — answering as the UphillTech team:
Yes you can. First, sand out the humps. Then skim very lightly around the edges of the sanded area with any drywall compound. The skim should be so thin that it will dry quickly, (within an hour) Spray your texture over an area at least twice as large as the area skimmed. This will help with the blending. (Practice on some scrap cardboard to get the distance and volume right for a good match.) After the spray has set slightly, (follow the time stated on the can.) lightly trowel over to knock down the peaks. I have found that light pressure with a sponge knife made for knockdown works the best. Let dry at least a day then prime and paint.
